ABOUT:
The SEL Art Project is an educational program offering tools to introduce contemporary art to special needs/neurodivergent students, through innovative visual, audio and tactile products.
THE PROBLEM:
As a special education teacher, I know that many special needs/neurodivergent students can be viewed as disruptive in museums or galleries. Some of my students may experience sensory overload, while others may pose safety issues. As a result, through no fault of theirs, many in my student population are not encouraged to access museums and galleries. This is unfair.
THE SOLUTION:
The SEL Art Project, will solve this museum-access-divide by bringing art and artists, into their classrooms.
HOW?
I will
1) Write innovative educational children's books
2) Create unique tactile friendly Jigsaw Puzzles and other hands-on games
3) Develop online games, based on the books and tactile products.
THE IMPACT:
Exposure and involvement in the arts will help special needs children
1) Nurture and enhance social-emotional well-being.
2) Promote resilience and self agency.
3) Offer opportunities to recognize and sustain the power of their unique voices.
WHY NOW?
As a current graduate art student, my unfettered access to all museums and galleries in NYC was in direct opposition to the lack of access my special needs/neurodivergent students had. This reality saddened me. My thesis, The SEL Art Project, will solve this museum-access-divide by bringing art and artists, into the classrooms of this population.
FUNDING USES:
Funding will be laser focused on developing and distributing the first in a series of innovative children's books, Finding Friends, which features sculptures by Claes Oldenburg. Publishing the first 1000 books will have expenses that include hiring children's book editors, hiring graphic designers, along with consulting fees for expert advice from special education administrators/teachers/social workers.
Funding will also cover cost for the first tactile-teaching-products, which is a custom designed Jigsaw Puzzle featuring contemporary artwork by artist Derrick Adams.
Funding will also contribute to developing and launching cross-platform Online-games, with hires that include visual designers, 3D Animators, programmers, always incorporating artistic imagery from artworks by either Derrick Adams, Claes Oldenburg or Roy Lichtenstein.
