About

The Secret Theatre has been a cornerstone of Queens’ arts community since 2007, when it was founded by Richard Mazda—writer, director, producer, actor, and musician—after relocating from the U.K. Richard recognized the vital role the arts play in the development of children and communities, and established the theatre at the Long Island City Arts Center, where it thrived for over a decade.

Like so many, The Secret Theatre was deeply impacted by the pandemic. When our LIC home closed in 2020, Richard quickly shifted to an online platform so students could continue to learn, create, and connect through acting, music, and dance during an isolating time.

In 2021, The Secret Theatre planted new roots in Woodside in partnership with Project for Living Artists, and expanded to Sunnyside with The Secret Theatre Academy for kids and teens ages 4–17. Since reopening, we’ve staged productions including Oliver!, Matilda Jr., High School Musical, and Into the Woods Jr., while hosting our annual Queens One Act Festival and continuing our beloved children’s shows Princess Particular and Pirate Pete’s Parrot—the longest-running family productions in Queens.

But what makes The Secret Theatre truly special are the relationships it fosters. More than a stage, it has become a home away from home where children, teens, and adults build creativity, confidence, and lifelong friendships.

Now, we are thrilled to share the next chapter: The award-winning Secret Theatre is returning to Long Island City in a brand-new 9,000 sq. ft. facility, Secret Arts. This space will house The Secret Academy and 20 new studios for Vital Arts Studios, creating a vibrant hub for artists and audiences alike. With your support, we can continue to nurture creativity, build community, and ensure that the arts remain accessible and thriving in Queens.
