THE SIGNAL HILL SANDBOX was created by actor, writer, and performer Karole Foreman. She collaborates with a collective of actors, singers, composers, writers, educators, visual artists, and performing artists. Our mission is to create diverse and inclusive work that speaks directly and powerfully about issues affecting our communities. Our first show was an adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Antony & Cleopatra” called
RULE MY WORLD. It is an urban opera that takes on the drug epidemic that is devastating our country. The show was presented at The Long Beach Playhouse as a part of their Studio Collaborative series.
Previously, we collaborated with The Children's Theatre of Long Beach (under the fiscally sponsored The Pet Welfare Project) to produce
BUDDY'S BIG DAY OUT! a musical about animal welfare. We presented the production 2 years in a row and brought productions to local schools, churches, pet adoption events, and presented free performances to children and their families at Memorial Care Children's Hospital in Long Beach, CA.
Recently, we produced a staged reading of local Long Beach playwright Brandon Ogborn's new show called
HOUSE CHURCH at the Aurora Theatre.
https://www.theauroratheater.com/Set during the pandemic, the play is about a diverse, faith based community group that meets at a couples' home for the inaugural session of "house church". What begins as an awkward, polite discussion on God’s purpose in troubling times turns critical when one of the guests appears to be in the midst of a dangerous psychic break. Questions of mental illness, gun violence, social responsibility, and closet racism come to a head in this searing, dark comedy.
Up next is our production of
MRS. CHRISTMAS a new musical play by Los Angeles playwright Tom Jacobson. Co-produced by Skylight Theatre,
https://www.skylighttheatre.org/. MRS CHRISTMAS is about a woman who inherits the Christmas traditions of her her recently deceased, estranged mother. The show wrestles with the question of legacy and how we reconcile our relationships with those who have gone before us and how we move forward with purpose in creating our own paths.
THE SIGNAL HILL SANDBOX'S mission is to continue to create, produce, and perform projects that speak powerfully and specifically to the communities we live in with work that is inclusive, informative, engaging, and compelling.
