About

The Szalon, a beloved Philadelphia cultural gathering, and renowned performance series modeled after 19th-century European salons, was founded in September 1986 by composer Andrea Clearfield who has hosted them in her living room in Philadelphia and around the U.S for 40 years. The Szalon continues the tradition of music in the home with a contemporary spin – in person and on zoom, 10 ensembles each perform 10 minutes of classical, contemporary, jazz, world, electronica, chamber, opera, dance, multimedia and more – helping to build a vital and engaged community around the arts. At a time when arts institutions are struggling, and the country is divided, the Szalon carries on with the belief that artists and arts can bridge divides and remind us of our shared humanity. The Szalon, a beloved Philadelphia cultural gathering, and renowned performance series modeled after 19th-century European salons, was founded in September 1986 by composer Andrea Clearfield who has hosted them in her living room in Philadelphia and around the U.S for 40 years.
