The Zora Project is a theatrical creation initiative developing an original folk musical inspired by the life, legacy, and creative methodologies of Zora Neale Hurston — writer, anthropologist, folklorist, playwright, and choreographer. Led by Broadway performer, choreographer, and director Tanya Birl-Torres, the project centers a cyclical creative practice where movement, music, and text exist as equal partners, honoring African diasporic ways of knowing and Hurston’s three sacred tools: folktales, ritual movement, and worksongs. Rooted, rigorous, and relational, the project travels a North-South-Caribbean corridor building genuine community relationships while developing an original theatrical work that embodies Hurston’s vision that Black drama told through dance, song, and story would liberate and heal the masses.
