About

Thelma J Museum of Black Visual Culture rescues, digitizes, and shares everyday African American photography—family albums, church portraits, school pictures, and community snapshots that rarely appear in traditional museum collections. By making these materials freely accessible online at thelmajmuseum.org, we eliminate geographic and financial barriers and ensure this history is available to students, educators, researchers, and the wider public. Through digital exhibitions, pop-up shows, and community workshops, we aim to preserve overlooked histories while empowering families to protect their own photographs for future generations.
