This is Not Our Home - An Immigration Story Through Dance

A Xicameri Production

About

In this political commentary, presented by Xicameri Productions, we follow the story of a binational couple that has gone through immigration, deportation and separation at the hands of the United States government.  Unfortunately, in this day and age, these stories are far too common, but not heard enough.  The story will be told through a series of four 20-minute pieces that will premiere online.  The work as a whole will be based on true events.  It will also include excerpts from interviews with other immigrants and deportees.  The main themes will be immigration, human rights, devotion and tenacity.

The four pieces will outline the story as follows:
1.    Binational: The two main characters live in different countries, cultures and languages creating miscommunication, misunderstands and general discomforts
2.    United States: The man moves to the woman’s country and deals with racism, difficult working conditions and a language barrier.
3.    Los Angeles: In the city of angels, the man is deported, the woman is left stranded in a place she doesn’t know and has no idea what became of him.  No communication, no confirmation, nothing.  The man is just gone.  In a parallel story, the man spends his whole time in a little room being interrogated, stripped down and eventually deported.
4.    Mexico: The woman goes to Mexico to find the man.  She gives up everything she had and who she was to follow him.  In an uplifting celebration of life, latin culture and unity we see the hope that immigration gives to all of us, in spite of the difficulties that arise.

The project will be a combination of music and dance.  The music will be original compositions by Stephanie Valadez and arrangements that are a combination of pop, Mexican folk music and contemporary new music.  There will be a mix of interviews of immigrants within the music.  The instrumentation will be voices, guitars, marimbas, and auxiliary percussion.  The dance will be contemporary with strong ballet and modern influences.  The four choreographers will be a mix of Mexicans, Americans and Americans of Mexican descent.

Choreographers, dancers and musicians will be announced soon.
