"In 2001, over a thousand love letters written during World War II were found in my grandmother's attic..."
The War Letters, a love story by Charlotte Purser
An origami rosebud, a paper windstorm, and a flying paper sparrow with a special message...
The War Letters is a life-affirming, whimsical exploration into the soul of love...told through the mind's eye of Alzheimer's.
Play synopsis:
In a world filled with paper, two newlyweds, Mimi and Red, read the letters they wrote to each other every day during World War II. This reverie is broken when Mimi realizes that all of the letters she wrote in 1945 have suddenly...
gone missing.
As Mimi searches for her missing letters, she soon recognizes that not only have they disappeared, but the words on the remaining letters no longer make sense...And after that, the very letters of those words become unreadable squiggles on a page.
As her world disintegrates, the audience understands that Mimi is not actually the vital young woman of those wartime letters, but an Alzheimer’s patient searching for her fragmented story… and fighting her reality every step of the way.
Supported by moments of classic illusion magic and a visually stunning production design, the play illustrates the fanciful realities within Mimi’s mind.
As the search draws to a conclusion, the audience discovers that even the most fractured moments at the end of a life hold exponential beauty, hope, and the magic of true human connection.
