Audiences all over America are responding to our heartfelt film about family and football. Help us share the educational and inspirational messages in this incredible film about the desegregation of college football with young people and college students throughout the country!
Directed by Maya Washington, Through the Banks of the Red Cedar, a play on the Michigan State University fight song, follows the filmmaker’s father, wide-receiver Gene Washington (College Football Hall of Fame, Michigan State Athletics Hall of Fame, 50 Greatest Vikings Honoree) and the parallel and divergent lives of highly decorated teammates Bubba Smith (Defensive Lineman), George Webster (Rover Back) and Clinton Jones (Running Back)as they make significant contributions to MSU’s 1965 and 1966 National Championship teams, later representing MSU as first round picks in the 1967 NFL Draft. In telling their story, the filmmaker considers her relationship with her once famous father, and the ways in which Gene and his cohort’s individual stories have impacted the present generation and American football as we know it.
This generation is as enthusiastic about our project as their parents and grandparents. So much so that we’ve begun engaging young audiences with the inspiring story of Gene Washington and his teammates who left the segregated South to attend MSU and pursue a better life through athletics and education.
In this global age where scandals and million dollar salaries dominate media attention, we are offering a rare glimpse into the lives of early pioneers of the game, their sacrifices, and tremendous achievements.
