Tilted Axes: Music for Mobile Electric Guitars is an ensemble of mobile electric guitarists and percussionists founded by composer Patrick Grant. Performing untethered with battery-powered amplifiers, the ensemble transforms streets, parks, galleries, and theaters into immersive musical environments where audiences encounter music as something living, moving, and shared.
Over the past fifteen years, Tilted Axes has evolved into a distinctive artistic practice that moves fluidly between public procession and theatrical performance. Following a profile in The New Yorker, the ensemble created the critically acclaimed 2024 theatrical production Circle With No Center at Theater for the New City and was subsequently invited to return with an expanded theatrical production, while continuing its tradition of free public performances throughout New York City.
Mobility is central to everything we do. Rather than asking audiences to come to a concert hall, Tilted Axes brings contemporary music directly into public life. Musicians move through neighborhoods and public spaces, dissolving the boundary between performer and audience and creating shared experiences through sound, movement, and curiosity.
Tilted Axes exists in two complementary forms: free, site-responsive processions and immersive theatrical productions combining live music, choreography, lighting, and visual media. The ensemble has also become an incubator for new composers, with members contributing an expanding repertoire of original works alongside those of Patrick Grant.
Occupying a space that resists easy definition, Tilted Axes reconciles opposites: concert and procession, performer and audience, structure and spontaneity, individual expression and collective experience. We believe adventurous contemporary music belongs wherever people gather.
