Combining the energy of rock, the creative discipline of theater, and a driving, experimental spirit, Tilted Axes is both a processional event, and an ensemble of mobile electric guitarists created by composer/performer Patrick Grant.
Tilted Axes’ participation in the 2019
Concert of Colors festival begins with a musical procession called “
PROMENADE” at the
Detroit Institute of Arts on July 12, 2019. The following day, July 13, Tilted Axes presents a new work entitled, “
MOONWALK” at the
Michigan Science Center. The performance at Mi-Sci commemorates the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, the first crewed space mission to land on the moon.
The festival and the two museums provide excellent opportunities for the group to offer transformative performances that are free of charge to the Detroit community. But Tilted Axes is entirely self-funded and relies on your generous support to pay for its musicians, rehearsal space, and other administrative costs. Please consider joining our team and contribute to Detroit’s musical history!

Tilted Axes Detroit’s expenses for this event are $4500, and your tax-deductible donation helps Tilted Axes Detroit’s18-plus members continue presenting free public performances. This includes rental of rehearsal space, supplies, transportation and production costs, and most importantly, honorariums for the musicians in return for their time and talent.
The costs we aim to defray with your support are:
Honorariums (ranging $100-$300) for up to 18 musicians and producers
12+ hours of rehearsal space at the Detroit Institute of Music Education
Airfare and baggage expenses for the music director (two trips)
Printing, batteries, cables, amp repair, and other material costs
General cartage around the city
Miscellaneous
All other costs (composers fee, studio costs, etc.) are assumed by the production company Peppergreen Media and its producer Patrick Grant and are not reflected in this campaign.
Your support not only ensures that Tilted Axes Detroit will be able to offer one-of-a-kind performance experiences to the general public, but you’ll also help us support our mission of science awareness and our common goal of renewable energy.
PLEASE consider becoming a part of the Tilted Axes Detroit team. We're offering a number of incentive items featuring our music and artwork. Please check them out!
There are Detroit-inspired tracks on our eponymous album like “Rivera Court”, “Techno Tilt”, “Beaubien Blues”, and “Corridor 84 + Krimson Coda”. The opening track, “Shapes 1”, was written for the 2015 Concert of Colors and Tilted Axes Detroit premiered the piece live on the Wolverine Stage that year.
Tilted Axes was created by composer/performer and Detroit native
Patrick Grant. His works are a synthesis of classical, popular, and world music styles that have found place internationally in concert halls, film, theater, dance, and visual media. His music moves between post-rock and classically-bent post-minimal styles, through Balinese-inspired gamelan and microtonality, to ambient, electronic soundscapes that involve many layers of electro-acoustic instruments. He’s the creator of International Strange Music Day (August 24) and is the inventor of the electric guitar procession.
