FIVE WEEKS AWAY! “Tilted Axes: The Longest Night”
5:00-7:00pm at The Hugh plaza, 601 Lexington
at E 53rd Street (The Citicorp Building)

Part of Make Music New York's Make Music Winter 2023

Tilted Axes: Music for Mobile Electric Guitars is an orchestra of guitarists who perform original, untethered music via portable mini-amps accompanied by percussionists. The project is informed by urban street band traditions, avant-garde theater and ancient music, and creates interactive spectacles that spark community conversation. The program includes three numbers — “Standing Still,” “Tiltinnabulation,” and Philip Glass’ “Knee Play 3” from Einstein on the Beach — with participatory handbell roles to transform the audience into music makers, no experience necessary. Presented in partnership with BXP.

Tilted Axes is a project of Peppergreen Media and is powered by VOX Amplification USA courtesy of KORG US. We thank our performance partners Strange Music Inc. and The Alchemical Studios.

Taking New Music Out Into The World — The 12th season of Tilted Axes is made possible in part by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) with the support of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, the (ASCAP) Plus+ Awards, the NYU Tisch School of the Arts Adjunct Development Fund, but mostly through the generous support of you the public through our fiscal sponsor Fractured Atlas.

Tilted Axes performances are always free to the public because of support from team members like you.

Now in our 12th season, Tilted Axes: Music for Mobile Electric Guitars is a orchestra of guitarists and percussionists created by composer/performer Patrick Grant. We perform untethered and in motion via mini-amps strapped over their shoulders, cutting musical pathways through the urban landscape, turning neighborhoods into their own sonic narratives.

Tilted Axes brings music & movement into communities with pop-up performances. Their spectacles are sonic structures comprised of polyrhythmic patterns, post-rock riffing, and contemplative drones. They will move about the neighborhood as a procession with stops to perform on-site in different choreographic formations.

2 - Signals Through the Flames — photo by Erick Gonzales.jpeg 636.54 KB

Our 2023-2024 Season includes new music from Patrick Grant, John Halo, Sarah Metivier Schadt, Dmitri Shapira and other core members TBA.

Choreography is by Christopher Caines.

Tilted Axes can perform anywhere there are people, excelling in untraditional venues. Our roster of musicians can change from performance to performance, city to city. Musicians learn a common repertoire created by diverse composers and rehearse it in workshops. Our performances are free to the public and are supported through institutional and/or private donations. We believe that music is essential, and not merely ornamental, to our daily life.

3 - Spring Thing — photo by Bob Krasner.jpeg 926.63 KB

Tilted Axes takes on aspects of spectacle informed by municipal band tradition, avant-garde theater, and world music. The project takes music 'out into the world' and seeks transformative situations meant to change community conversation. It is an apolitical organization, but it does support science, arts programs, and renewable energy whenever possible. Tilted Axes works best when it is part of something bigger than itself i.e. festivals, exhibitions, community initiatives, astronomical events. It's conceptual — and it rocks!

Your contributions to Tilted Axes will help pay for the necessities that enable us to make music that is free for all to enjoy. Your donation helps to defray costs such as:

Honoraria (paying the artists and performers)
Professional Fees (recording engineers, accountants)
Administrative costs (advertising, marketing, staff, web site, data storage)
Remote Recording Workshops (offered regularly online for free to small groups)

Since its 10th season, Tilted Axes has initiated the Composer Creations program. This allows at least three ensemble members per season to write new music for the group and to workshop it in rehearsal before its public premiere. This ensembles our repertoire to constantly grow and include as many artistic voices as possible.

Our needs are small, but our impact is big. Please consider becoming a part of our team!

The powerful little Pignose, with that distinctively funky Pignose sound, has become an on-call staple of countless recording studios, rehearsal studios, dorm rooms, dressing rooms, and backyards around the world since the '60s. The ultimate in portable amplifiers, the legendary 7-100 is the original "go where you want to go" amp. A 5" speaker in a rugged, metal-cornered cabinet moves the air for this amp, while a preamp output jack lets you take advantage of its great distortion in the studio, into a PA, or with a larger external amp. Powered by batteries or with an optional power supply, you can take this little screamer anywhere! Offer only valid in the USA.
