Toppled Monuments Archive (TMA) is a digital, open-source platform that documents how monuments become sites of ongoing cultural transformation through defacement, intervention, and removal. TMA does not regard monuments as static. The archive presents complex narratives of how monuments reflect and reshape political and social dynamics.
Founded by Jillian McManemin in 2020, the archive spans historical periods and geographical regions—exploring diverse monument interventions enacted by government policy, social movements, military action, and local community and activist efforts. With over 200+ entries from 40+ international contributors—scholars, activists, artists, and local researchers—the archive illustrates that monuments and power are always in flux.
In partnership with Stamen Design, a leading data visualization and digital cartography studio, TMA is developing an innovative digital platform that maps historical interventions and presents in-depth, collaborative research. As monuments are quietly relocated to private collections—or returned to public space—TMA's work becomes increasingly vital. We are committed to preserving this pivotal moment as a living testament to collective action, social transformation, and the power of reimagining public memory.
