TRADES Artist in Residence program fosters a widespread appreciation of the contemporary arts by providing maximum community access to the broadest O‘ahu communities.
Hawai‘i, with its distinct and complex histories, is an ideal site to offer visiting artists a unique experience not possible elsewhere. TRADES explores the idea of cultural syncretism — that multicultural influences contribute to a local culture that is greater than the sum of its parts. TRADES operates on the principle of reciprocal exchange. Visiting artists will introduce their ideas, discourse, methodologies, expertise, and practices to O‘ahu’s students, working artists and art enthusiasts. TRADES aims to create a round trip circuit for contemporary art in the islands, with the introduction of offshore techniques and the exportation of local perspectives. Committed to outreach, we are in partnership with the Honolulu Museum of Art and the Department of Art and Art History at UH Manoa. TRADES is dedicated to selecting artists with diverse backgrounds and points of view.
