About

Based in Maine, Big Boy Dance is the creative home of choreographer Tristan Koepke, who collaborates with dance and multidisciplinary artists across the country to craft choreographies, installations, films, and performances. Tristan's dances are rooted in queer intimacies, poetic imagination, and a play between structure and chance. His work frequently investigates the aesthetics of longing, tenderness, and and the fluid, performative nature of identities, often using the body as a site for speculative and queer futurities. With engaging spatial design and an air of vivacious mystery, Big Boy Dance pieces invite audiences into richly textured, affectively resonant environments.

Current projects include Bunk Beds, a queer archival performance that channels the aesthetics of Merce Cunningham and John Cage through a lens of desire, disorientation, and devotion. Rooted in score-making, improvisation, and the principles of relationship anarchy, the work mobilizes Cage/Cunningham compositional structures to trace and imagine collective queer lineages with earnest physicality and playful tension. Also in process: Emotional Tofu, a multi-iterative performance work that queers Post Malone’s “sad boy” aesthetics through slowness and speculation.
