About

“Trophy” is a large-scale outdoor public art work exploring monuments, commemoration and deeper meanings of what trophies mean. The piece will be cast in mycelium, the rootlike structure of fungus, which will slowly biodegrade over the course of the exhibition, and/or may be comprised of reused and repurposed objects. Making a commemorative object in a traditional form out of impermanent material, the piece raises questions about the commemorative landscape, not just current monuments and memorials, but decisions about who gets commemorated, who decides and how this impacts our communities. This is particularly salient at any of the venues. The piece may fuse mycological and natural material processes with fine-art techniques and content, and/or reclaimed/reused/recycled objects, ideally expanding viewers' conception of nature, art, and politics. The proposed project(s) will all offer long term access to the public, with no admission fees. Ideally, the variations of “Trophy” will show in different venues in different cities and towns, so the audience will be wide. The pieces will tailor some to the specific place, but the idea is that the “audience” is not a specific slice of the population, but that the piece and the concept can connect with a wide swath of ages, backgrounds, ethnicities, etc.
