True Story Pictures believes in the power of personal stories. We are a Memphis-based documentary production company that amplifies personal stories, experiences, and perspectives in order to create systems change, with a goal to transform harm into healing.
Our current film, JUVENILE, is directed by Sarah Fleming and Joann Self Selvidge. This feature documentary premiered at Indie Memphis Film Festival 2023 and is currently available for community screenings and educational use. Please visit http://juvenilefilm.com to learn more.
JUVENILE explores how people across the country who were incarcerated as youth are using their experiences to break and remake the juvenile justice system. The film features five young adults, tracing the pathways of their childhood trauma and system involvement and introducing us to where they are now in their healing journeys - and the grassroots community work that they are doing to disrupt harmful systems.
Shimaine, Ja’Vaune, Romeo, Ariel and Michael are all from different backgrounds and parts of the country, and each had a different pathway into the system: foster care, sexual abuse, violence, homelessness, mental illness and substance abuse. But as their individual narratives unfold in the film, a cohesive narrative emerges of the broken promises of our juvenile system across all American communities.
