Unheard-of Project

Contemporary music. Living composers. Live performers.

    About

Ford Fourqurean (clarinet), Matheus Souza (violin), So Sugiyama (cello), and Daniel Anastasio (piano) form the core of Unheard-of//Ensemble, a contemporary chamber ensemble dedicated to the development and performance of new music by living composers.

Unheard-of’s 2018-2019 season continues the Unheard-of//Dialogues Project examining the modern voice of Messiaen quartet instrumentation, featuring works written for Unheard-of by Reiko Füting, Margaret Schedel, Erin Rogers, Michael Lanci, Nathan Hudson, and Christopher Stark, as well as recent works by Tonia Ko and Eric Nathan. Their first album featuring works from the Dialogues project will be released in early 2019, leading to their second Midwest tour in February 2019. This tour will include a performance at Short North Stage, Columbus, OH, and the premiere of a new work by Ken Thomson supported by the Johnstone Fund for New Music. Other 2019 season highlights include their second southern tour and their second workshop with the Manhattan School of Music composition studio, as well as new works by Niloufar Nourbakhsh and Leah Asher.

Past seasons included over 30 premieres as well as teaching and performing at universities and colleges across the United States, including workshops with the Manhattan School of Music Composition Studio and University of Texas- Arlington, a guest residency at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and performances at the Art Institute of Chicago, PianoForte (Chicago), the Applause New Music Concert Series (Texas), the University of Louisville, Columbus State University, University of Alabama- Birmingham, and others, as well as radio features on 89.3 Montreal, 90.1 WUSB, and Clarinet Corner.

As both performers and educators, the ensemble mentors and works with students, not only focusing on performance, but also the role of entrepreneurship as a professional musician in the 21st century. In this vein, Unheard-of has guest lectured across the United States as well as part of a Manhattan School of Music Distance Learning event speaking with students from the Sibelius Academy.

Unheard-of//Ensemble collaborates with composers at the forefront of modern music to create projects that connect with new, diverse audiences. Based in New York City, the group is committed to the idea that new music belongs in every community and implements this mission through touring, outreach, and a social media presence to connect with both audiences and young artists throughout the country, focusing specifically on bringing new music to locations generally out of reach for most new music organizations.
