As a Navajo artist/photographer my work is about reconnecting with my homeland and being inspired by family and people while observing the everyday lives of the Navajo weavers. I am seeking funds to help me continue on my photography project called "Weaving Women" which will have me traveling back to the Navajo Reservation for a few weeks, interviewing, and photographing Navajo weavers in the area. I will also hire a videographer to help document me working on my project. My goal with this project is to showcase the talent and drive of just a few female and male Navajo weavers who have recorded parts of their own lives in their rugs. More often than not, Navajo rugs consist of color schemes, motifs, and patterns. However, the pictorial weaving tradition employs rugs to capture a temporal snapshot of contemporary life, much like a photograph. My sister, Pamela, a recognized and prolific master weaver, creates pictorial rugs of family members, society, and historic events, such as facemasks used to protect against COVID-19. My project features a number of weavers and their different styles of rugs. These photographs will enable the Navajo, Native Americans, and all Americans the opportunity to see life on the other side of the loom and peek into the personal lives of these modern-day artisans. My end goal for my project is to have several photography showings and a book showcasing my photographs.
