"You're Supposed to Bleed the First Time" is Daniel Oliver Lee's advanced senior thesis project at NYU Tisch. Combining elements of animation, ballet, puppetry, mask work, and a hand-painted impressionist set, the film tells the story of a young neurodivergent dancer's loss of innocence. In order to escape from the harrowing reality of her new profession, a young ballerina dissociates to a surreal dance fantasy in an effort to cope with the loss of her virginity at the hands of the head of the ballet, a masked man named The Rat King.
