About

Zero Art Fair is an experimental way to match available artworks with people who want to live with art but can’t necessarily afford it. Developed by artists Jennifer Dalton and William Powhida, the fair uses a ‘store-to-own’ contract to offer artworks free of charge, but with strings attached. Through Zero Art Fair artworks are transferred via a novel contract that includes a 5-year vesting period before ownership is automatically transferred to the new owner. During the vesting period, the contract grants the artist the right to sell the work, borrow the work for exhibition, and under certain conditions request the return of the work. It also grants artists rights in the future value of the work in perpetuity. The founders of Zero Art Fair believe the art market has done a very limited job of elevating the best art into view, and that there is a lot of great art sitting in boxes in the dark. Zero Art Fair is a way for people who can't afford the market price of art to become art collectors, and a way for artists to let go of some art they are storing without letting go of its potential value.
