This is a documentary film about collective liberation. It’s about “claiming a different future.” (Stevenson, 2020) This film is a freedom song for (and by) the people who have been historically dehumanized and most marginalized in the United States. The film will look white supremacy culture/whiteness and the ways religion has been weaponized to justify the dehumanization of Black people and other marginalized groups in America. More importantly, the film will also look at the ways faith and spirituality can be pathways to collective liberation.
Through conversations with activists, organizers, faith leaders, scholars, artists, liberation practitioners, freedom dreamers, and everyday people, we will approach this story of collective liberation in three ways: First, we’ll look at the histories of white supremacy culture/whiteness in the US and its ongoing role in fueling the interlocking systems of oppression millions of people encounter on a daily basis in this country. We’ll also look at the parallel histories of Black Liberation Theology and the advances made because of freedom movements. From there, the film will explore the enduring legacies of white supremacy culture/whiteness, illuminating the ways they continue to show up in faith-based spaces and everyday life. It will also underscore the importance of taking action for justice. Finally, the film will issue a call to action, centering pathways to collective liberation. In the tradition of Afro-Futurists and guided by African and Indigenous wisdom teachings and practices, we will explore multiple pathways toward collective liberation.
