New Play, "ABCD - American Born Confused Desi", by emerging South Asian playwright, Lily Abha Cratsley unravels the relationships between a daughter, a mother, and a Nani as they navigate their dual identities and unburden themselves of deep-seated intergenerational trauma. ABCD is a deep dive into intergenerational trauma and the legacy of the real South Asian hate group, the Dotbusters, that rose to prominence in New Jersey in the '80s. This play gives voice to the female perspective, the grace, the fire, the indignation, the sorrow, and ultimately the comforting joy in on another that is felt by these women as they face each other and themselves.
KriyaShakti Performing Arts is a new entity dedicated to theater and dance work that amplifies and celebrates South Asian artists and their vast perspectives in a global community. KriyaShakti is a Sanskrit term that means the "power to act, do, or create" with Kriya meaning "to Act" and Shakti referring to "Intelligent energy". Shakti also refers to the feminine and goddess energy. Our mission is to amplify the South Asian female artistic voice; a voice that intelligently creates to inspire change, empathy and action, while representing, reflecting, and addressing the untold stories in the diaspora.
We are honored to have ABCD as our inaugural production and hope your support can help kick us off to a strong and successful journey of new work development and production. ABCD has been selected for two competitive and highly reputable staged readings in Los Angeles. This next step to produce its first staging is an important step as we build the foundation to produce it on a larger scale and potentially tour it.
In our initial run of this show, opening November 11 for two weekends and 6 performances, we will also be hosting a series of ancillary community building events including a free family friendly Diwali Mela Block Party, a pre-show reception with a local community restaurant partner, and a film screening of shorts made by or featuring South Asian woman in partnership with Rickshaw Film Foundation.
