WHAT THIS PROJECT IS
”Meditations on Perihelion” is a live performance of original electronic music with video projection presented in a planetarium space. The video is projected on the planetarium dome in 360° full dome format to create an experience that is both immersive and shared.
The narrative of the performance explores the human experience of the passage of time during the various cycles that the Earth moves through over time and attempts to represent the data surrounding these cycles musically and visually. The project began with a focus on perihelion, the closest point the earth is to the sun. Over the last two years it has expanded to include the full year cycle and the precession cycle (axial tilt) that lasts 26000 years and affects where we see our “North”.
WHAT THE GOAL IS
The goal of this project is to explore the world of science through the world of sound in an immersive multi-media experience. The music is all my own original work inspired and informed by the changes in the earth's orbit from equinox to solstice. The visuals are created in collaboration with planetarium staff and will reflect that narrative in both literal and abstract ways.
The hope for the work is to provide a space for contemplation, inspire the audience to explore art & science, encourage collaboration across these disciplines, and to experiment with the connections between. After each performance the audience is invited to a discussion to present the details of the creation and performance of a work of this kind.
WHAT YOUR SUPPORT WILL DO
In the short term, contributions to the project will go to offset production costs of developing visual and musical material. In the longer term donations will go to hiring local artists to contribute visual material, support touring expenses, and contract with a software engineer to create deeper interactivity.
